Fun with the Elk in Wyoming

Saturday, February 23rd, 2008

Here are a couple of videos from my latest excursion to deploy radio collars on elk wintering on feedgrounds in Wyoming (some reading about the feedgrounds can be found here and here).

In this first video I’m riding on the horse-drawn sleigh from which loads of hay are fed to elk everyday, all winter. From the sleigh, we were able to target elk for collaring and shoot them with a dart containing anesthesia.

This second video features Jared and Jen helping an elk get back on her feet as she wakes up from the anesthesia (she seemed to take a little longer to wake up than the other 4 animals that we captured that day). Brandon is sitting next to me on the sleigh and the feeder is the one standing on the sleigh. Brandon and Jared are both working for Wyoming Game and Fish, studying feedgrounds and their influence on brucellosis presence in elk.

I received two more splendid birthday gifts from either side of the country! A super cute squirrel cookie cutter from Lindsay in Seattle, WA and an adorable ceramic squirrel plate from Julie in Hoboken, NJ. What a great combo, I can bake some squirrel shaped cookies and serve them on my squirrel plate. Thanks Julie and Lindsay!

Sara's first time on a snowboard……

Friday, February 15th, 2008

Jeffree here…. took this video of Sara’s first snowboard lesson at Bridger Bowl. By all accounts she did quite well and by the end of the lesson she was going up the big chairlift and riding down a much larger hill. One question we are not sure of is if she is regular or “goofy” in terms of her stance on the board. Perhaps we can answer that the next time out……..

Cheers!

Cross-country Skiing on a Saturday!

Saturday, February 9th, 2008

I was out along Sourdough Creek today with Claire, Cal, Galen, baby Jade, and Richard the dog. There was lots of fun to be had on the cross-country skis…and I know I’ll be sore in the morning!

Would you believe that this is a photo of 32,000 Barbies? It represents the number of women who had elective breast augmentation surgery in each month of 2006. Brought to us by Chris Jordan, a Seattle-based photographer trying to help us understand our impact on the planet. Check out his work!
